Principal plays hooky...to adopt

Glen Grove School's new principal didn't show up when classes began last week in Glenview School District 34.

"Most principals are supposed to be there on the first day of school," fourth-graders like Austin Okuno know.

But Merryl Brownlow wasn't playing hooky, and everyone at Glen Grove knew it.

Instead of welcoming students and parents to a new school year, Brownlow and her husband, Alec, were in China adopting 9-month-old Lucy Carolanne Ya.
